Writing
Lucy Nelson is a writer of fiction and non fiction living on unceded Dharawal Country. Her work has appeared in Kill Your Darlings, MeanjinThe Sydney Morning Herald, Southword and The Big Issue among others. She is currently completing a collection of short fiction with support from Create NSW. The manuscript was longlisted for the 2023 Hachette Richelle Prize and was awarded the 2022 Writing NSW residential Varuna Fellowship. She was the winner of the 2021 Newcastle Short Story Award and was shortlisted for the International Sean O’Faolain Short Fiction Prize. Lucy has been a guest panelist at the Bangalore Literature Festival in India, the Asia Pacific Writers and Translators Network in Macau, China and National Young Writers Month in Australia. She studied Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT in Melbourne. She is represented by Martin Shaw at the Books Desk.

Workshop Facilitation
Formerly, Lucy led Word on the Street, a creative writing education and participation program for adults experiencing disadvantage or disability. Word on the Street is one of many amazing programs offered by Upbeat Arts. She also facilitates beginner fiction for adults, kids creative writing workshops and women’s writing circles.

Events & Programming
Lucy currently works for the Australian Writers’ Guild as Awards and Events Manager and was the lead producer on the 56th Annual AWGIE Awards. From 2017—2019 Lucy was the Artistic Director of the Queensland Poetry Festival. Previously she was co-founder and co-director of Noted Writers Festival in Canberra and co-founder of the Canberra chapter of global dance community No Lights No Lycra. She cut her community arts and festival teeth in the early years of You Are Here, filling empty city spaces with weird and beautiful art.
